What should I eat?

According to recent statistics, nearly one tenth of Americans are suffering from type II diabetes, therefore, the disease has entered a dozen former death row list. A wide variety of data indicates that blood sugar levels are multifaceted the impact of diet, like the eating time and food intake, lifestyle, the impact of eating on intestinal microflora and so on. Actually, a large range of changes in glucose may occur even after a mean for an individual. And even if everyone intake the same food, it is also not easy to predict responses, because metabolism differs from person to person.

In this recent study published in Cell: a group of researchers have monitored the blood glucose levels of more than 800 people continuously for more than one week, analyzing their GI and sorting of foods that have impact on blood sugar.
The researchers gave those volunteers standardized breakfast every morning and collected the daily food intake recorded on APP. They also collected the volunteers’ measurements, blood results, blood glucose monitoring results and stool specimens through the distribution of questionnaires.
On the other hand, the researchers gave those 26 participants customized diet recipes. The results showed that the blood glucose levels can significantly reduce in postprandial and the species of intestinal microflora changed. But because it is a personalized diet, so the blood glucose level change was different, while the degree of change in the intestinal microflora is roughly the same.
At the same time, Cell also released the reviews from Peter J. Turnbaugh for this achievement. Turnbaugh noted that this study obtained a new calculation method which is an integration of a variety of variables, including some established factors involved in blood sugar reactions, such as carbohydrates intake, sleep cycles, physical activity, age, HbA1c, calories, dietary intake time, etc. This calculation method predicted correctly the blood glucose changes of the individual.
Maybe someday, we can design some kind of diet and form intestinal genome that is beneficial for the treatment. Good news is that we may not need to tailor different interventions for each individual.
